Things to Take into Account When Buying a Playhouse
Here are five tips to keep in mind when you are selecting your cubby.
- Check the size of your yard and whether to use the front or back yard.
- Decide where you want the cubby house kit to be installed as position is important; including angle, surrounding trees, scrubs, etc.
- Do you want extras such as a cubby with a slide or a playhouse with a sand pit?
- Do you want an elevated cubby house?
- Will you need room in your yard for other play equipment in the future, such as a trampoline?
That should pretty much cover it as a checklist of what to consider before you make your purchase. We had a cubby with a slide but the slide was too close to the tree and the kids didn’t play on it much as a result. That’s why I say it is important to consider the position of the cubby house. You also don’t want it in full sun if you live in somewhere like Queensland. So, consider what’s in your garden that might be a hazard and also the weather.
When my kids were babies I took them to playgroup and they had some great cubbie house accessories. I learned what was best, from what they played with the most. So, it’s great to get a few items for inside the cubby such as wooden storage shelves for cups, plates, play food and so on. Also, a sink, Fridge and small table and chairs are great to make the playhouse fully functional and a place the kids want to go to play. Even such things as a chalk board, table cloth, menu (For when they play restaurants) and cleaning equipment are great. We had a cubby vacuum and sponge, bucket and mop and the kids loved these items to use for role play.
Our cubby house was wooden as you can see from the picture above. We decided to make it elevated because we wanted a slide and were going to enclose the underneath to use for storage, which never ended up happening as we sold the house. We also had a rope net to climb up one side of the cubby and it did get a lot of use.
Lastly, just make sure you get something that is age appropriate. No good getting a cubby house kit if your child is too young to use it or you have to be out there supervising the entire time.
I would often joke that our cubby was so well decked out that I was going to move in! They really are loads of fun for kids so definitely worth the investment.
